AI predicts when elderly people are likely to experience a fall, allowing preemptive intervention
In September 2023, I was invited by BBC radio to comment on use of AI by Cera to predict when elderly patients are likely to fall and injure themselves.
This issue is very personal, and came on the 1st year anniversary of my grandmother’s passing, for whom my mother was the primary care giver. Grandma was mostly in good health, until an unexpected fall took her to hospital. She lost her mobility and never returned home. This is true for 1000s of elders, who either become very dependent or do not survive after a fall.
My views:
1️⃣ Technology for elderly care has long been ignored. It is high time we apply AI to improve care quality for that segment of the population, and reduce stress for the care workers.
2️⃣ Create better designed technical solutions to allow care workers to record important information about patients easily, quickly and compliant with Care Quality Commission regulations.
3️⃣ Use the above data ethically to inform and support care workers, allowing them to deliver better care for one of the most vulnerable groups in our society.
4️⃣ Use technology to reduce financial burden on our health services, free up funds and deploy them to create an environment for better mobility for the elderly.
5️⃣ With world’s aging population growing rapidly, we have to take the issue of elderly care seriously and disrupt the sector with innovation.
