Will AI Take ALL Our Jobs? No!

“Could AI do your job?” was the topic on BBC Radio 5 live, Nicky Campbell show. I was invited to join the expert panel with Inma Martinez and Priya Lakhani OBE to comment on the topic. This talk track was in response to the conversation between RishiSunak and ElonMusk on impact of AI on work.

Brief version, and with no surprises,
– AI will disrupt the job market
– It will not take ALL jobs, but some will become obsolete
– New jobs will be created. We cannot yet predict what they all will be

Aside of this classic debate, what struck me on the show today was the emotional impact of the topic. Callers from very different professions articulated how they do their work, and why AI would be damaging if it did take over.

⭕ A funeral celebrant:
When people are drowning in grief, recalling the life of their departed loved one, how can we unleash AI to interview them?

⭕ A lute player:
“An AI lute player can make you sad, but a human lute player can make you cry”. Emotions of the player, that which is being played and those of the listener – all come together to create a unique atmosphere. How can AI replace this?

⭕ A radio presenter:
Millions of people tune in to radio daily to listen to human stories. Stories of our frontline workers, our elders, our social fabric. These invoke inspiration, frustration, joy, heartbreak. How can AI connect so many unconnected people with stories?

Put the AI hype aside for a moment, and let’s introspect what it means to be a human being with a mind. The abstract that refers to the collective aspects of intellect and consciousness manifested by thought, perception, emotion, will, memory, imagination and more…
